The Galapagos finches are frequently mentioned as an illustration of evolution, but this is really just an example of natural selection in action, where various traits already present in the genetic potential become predominant in different sub-populations when they provide a survival and reproductive advantage. Variation within the kind has occurred but no large-scale or upward evolution has taken place. No new genetic information has been created. All of these varieties are still finches and can inter-breed.
