The next two slides give examples of “living” fossils. That is, plants and animals that are alive now and are also found in the fossil record.

The Coelacanth is and interesting case, since it was believed to be a transitional form between fish and amphibians. Perhaps the pair back fins were proto-legs. In 1938 one was caught alive and the soft body parts were able to be examined. It was found to be a total fish. Since then, several others have been found.
