Notes:

Older Carbide (or acetylene) lamps – used during the late 1800s to early 1900s

Put calcium carbide in the lower chamber (the generator).
Put water in the Upper reservoir
A mechanism is used to control the rate the water drips onto calcium carbide
By controlling this rate; the production of acetylene gas is controlled
This, in turn, controls the size of the flame at the burner
